Human beings were created with needs, appetites, vulnerabilities, and empty spaces. The question is not whether those spaces will be filled. The question is: what will fill them?
When revelation, Qur’an, dhikr, meaningful work, family, and righteous companionship do not occupy those spaces, distraction and temptation are always ready to compete for them.
If you do not intentionally fill the empty spaces of your life with truth, something else will eventually fill them for you.
You Were Created Needy
The khutbah begins before smartphones, social media, drugs, gambling, gaming addiction, and the modern culture of endless distraction.
When Allah created Adam عليه السلام, Iblīs examined this new creation.
“When he saw that he was hollow, he recognized that he had been created with a nature that does not always restrain itself.” Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2611
The human being becomes hungry, thirsty, lonely, anxious, bored, and moved by desire. The heart searches for something to attach itself to. The mind searches for something to occupy it. Time searches for something to fill it.
The question is not whether those spaces will be filled. The question is: who or what will fill them?
The Hollow Servant and Al-Ṣamad
Allah introduces Himself with one of His magnificent Names:
You are needy. Allah is free of all need. You tire. Allah does not. You depend on others. All creation depends upon Him.
Two Hungers: The Body and the Soul
The Hunger of the Body
The stomach becomes hungry. The body becomes thirsty. Desire seeks fulfillment. Allah created lawful ways to satisfy those needs, while also placing boundaries around them.
The Hunger of the Soul
The soul needs Qur’an, Ṣalāh, dhikr, Tawḥīd, Sunnah, beneficial knowledge, duʿāʾ, and righteous companionship.
Modern life has become extremely efficient at feeding the body, while many have forgotten how to feed the soul.
Entertainment may distract the soul. It cannot nourish the soul. The dunya may temporarily quiet the feeling of emptiness, but it cannot permanently satisfy the need for which Allah created the heart.
The Battle Is Over What Fills You
Revelation can transform a human being. It can turn fear into courage, purposelessness into mission, and slavery to desire into servitude to Allah.
That is why attention matters.
The technology changes. The strategy does not.
Yesterday, laghw was noise around the recitation. Today it can be:
- One video after another.
- One image after another.
- One game after another.
- One notification after another.
- Scrolling without end.
Shayṭān Does Not Begin by Saying: “Become an Addict”
The Prophet ﷺ gave us a powerful image: a straight path, walls on either side, and doors leading away from it.
When the believer approaches one of those doors, a warning comes:
“Do not open it, because if you open it, you will enter it.”
Shayṭān rarely begins by showing you the final destruction.
He says:
- Look once.
- Place one bet.
- Try it once.
- Send the message.
- Open the link.
The Blessing Called Free Time
“There are two blessings concerning which many people are cheated: health and free time.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 6412
Free time is not nothing. It is something valuable.
Do not ask: “How do I kill these two hours?” Ask: “What will I purchase with these two hours of my life?”
Do Not Merely Remove the Ḥarām — Replace It
Suppose someone spent three hours every night in a destructive habit. Allah blesses him with tawbah.
Now what happens to those three hours?
If we only say “Stop” and leave three empty hours, we may leave the door open for the old behavior to return.
Replace it with:
- Prayer.
- Qur’an.
- Exercise.
- Family.
- Work or study.
- A beneficial project.
- Righteous companionship.
- Community service.
- A useful skill.
Fill your heart with Tawḥīd. Fill your life with Sunnah. Fill your tongue with dhikr. Fill your mind with beneficial knowledge. Fill your time with meaningful activity.
A Message to Parents
Do not only say “No.”
Do not only tell your son or daughter: do not use the phone, do not play that game, do not watch that, do not go there, and do not spend time with those friends.
Then leave behind an enormous empty space.
Give them:
- The Masjid.
- Qur’an.
- Sports.
- Good companionship.
- Responsibility.
- A skill.
- Service to others.
- Meaningful work.
- Your time.
Five Practical Steps
Identify Your Empty Spaces
When are you weakest? Late at night? When alone? On weekends? When angry, rejected, depressed, or bored? Know your doors before they open.
Close the Door
Remove the application. Unfollow the account. Change the environment. Leave harmful companionship. Move the phone out of the bedroom. Do not negotiate with temptation at the doorway.
Replace What You Remove
Replace scrolling with reading, isolation with companionship, heedlessness with dhikr, sinful entertainment with permissible recreation, and bad habits with good habits.
Do Not Fight Addiction Alone
Seeking treatment does not contradict tawakkul. Religious guidance and qualified professional treatment can work together. Build accountability and remove access to the behavior.
Return to Al-Ṣamad
When you feel empty, lonely, anxious, weak, or overwhelmed by desire, turn first to the One to whom all creation turns in need.
What If I Already Opened the Door?
Perhaps someone thinks: “This advice came too late for me. I already opened the door. I have been inside for years.”
Then this message is especially for you: do not despair.
The same Shayṭān who first said, “Just open the door once,” may later whisper, “Allah will never forgive you.”
He lied the first time. And he is lying again.
Close the door today. Return to Allah today. Break the secrecy. Change the environment. Remove the means. Seek help. Build a new routine.
Protect the Connection Between Your Heart and the Qur’an
Shayṭān does not necessarily need to take the Muṣḥaf out of your home.
He only needs to keep you busy enough that you never open it.
He does not necessarily need to make you hate Ṣalāh. He only needs to keep your schedule so full that you continually delay it.
He does not have to convince you that dhikr is wrong. He only needs to make something else seem more interesting every moment of your day.
When You Become Free, Do Not Become Empty
Fill the body with ḥalāl.
Fill the heart with Tawḥīd.
Fill the soul with revelation.
Fill the tongue with dhikr.
Fill the mind with knowledge.
Fill the home with Qur’an.
Fill youth with purpose.
Fill free time with what benefits.
O Allah, fill our hearts with īmān, our tongues with Your remembrance, our homes with Qur’an, and our time with what pleases You.
O Allah, protect our sons and daughters from trials, addictions, harmful desires, harmful companionship, and the traps of Shayṭān.
O Allah, whoever among the Muslims is struggling with addiction or recurring sin, open for them the door of sincere repentance, beneficial treatment, righteous companionship, and a heart attached to You.
