The Trial of Patience in Da’wah: Lessons from Nuh, Musa, and Yunus
“Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.”(Surah Yunus, 10:98)
Having exposed the deliberate ideological efforts used to undermine faith (Theme II), Surah Yunus now turns to historical precedent—proving that such challenges are neither new nor insurmountable.
The Qur’an does not just diagnose the problem—it provides real-life examples of past prophets who faced organized rejection, ideological resistance, and even persecution, yet remained steadfast in calling to truth.
🔹 The stories of Nuh, Musa, and Yunus (AS) serve as divine proof that the struggle between truth and falsehood is not new—but it is one that always ends with the triumph of patience, perseverance, and trust in Allah.
🚀 Introduction: Dispel Despair – The Victory of Patience in Da’wah
Surat Yunus stands as a beacon of reassurance for every Da’wah carrier facing the hardships of calling to truth in a rejecting society. Rejection, resistance, and even hostility are not new struggles—they are part of a historical pattern that every messenger of Allah has endured.
One of the greatest tests in Da’wah is despair—when efforts seem fruitless, and rejection persists. Surat Yunus dismantles this despair, providing historical proof that:
✅ Patience in Da’wah leads to success.
✅ Rejection is not a failure but a test of perseverance.
✅ Allah’s wisdom unfolds beyond human perception.
✅ Divine victory arrives at the perfect time—never too soon, never too late.
📖 The Evolution of Divine Sunnah: From Eradication to Mutual Resistance (Tadāfu’)
Through the stories of Nuh, Musa, and Yunus (AS), Surat Yunus reveals an evolution in divine intervention—from the total destruction of disbelievers to an ongoing struggle between truth and falsehood.
🔹 The Sunnah of Universal Eradication – Nuh (AS)
- Before Musa (AS), rejection of truth led to complete destruction (e.g., the flood of Nuh (AS)).
- Disbelievers were entirely wiped out, leaving only the believers to rebuild.
🔹 The Transition to Struggle – Musa (AS)
- With the revelation of Shari’ah to Musa (AS), the responsibility of confronting falsehood was transferred to believers through Jihad.
- Pharaoh’s drowning marked the last major divine eradication—after this, falsehood would be resisted, not annihilated outright.
Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri[1] said: “After the Torah was revealed, no nation was destroyed by divine punishment from the heavens or the earth—except for the town that was transformed into apes. Have you not seen the words of Allah:
📖 “And We indeed gave Musa the Scripture after We had destroyed the former generations.”[2]
🔹 The Sunnah of Mutual Resistance (Tadāfu’) – From Musa (AS) Onward
- From Musa (AS) onward, complete divine eradication ceased.
- The confrontation between truth and falsehood would now occur through Tadāfu’—a mutual struggle, rather than immediate annihilation.
📖 “And were it not for Allah repelling some people by means of others (Tadāfu’), the earth would have been corrupted. But Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.”[3]
🔹 The Role of Yunus (AS) in the Era of Tadāfu’
- By the time of Yunus (AS), divine intervention had fully shifted to the Sunnah of Tadāfu’.
- Unlike past nations, his people repented and were saved, proving that guidance is in Allah’s hands alone.
🔹 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ & the Completion of Tadāfu’
- The final stage of divine intervention was not about eradicating opponents but about engaging in persistent Da’wah, resilience, and Jihad against falsehood.
📖 “And fight them until there is no more fitnah and the religion, all of it, is for Allah. “[4]
🚀 Surat Yunus marks the shift from instant divine punishment to long-term resistance—showing how the mission of believers evolved from witnessing cosmic eradications to engaging in steadfast struggle against falsehood.
📖 The Universal Pattern of Rejection & Divine Justice
📖 “Then after him, We sent Messengers to their people, they brought them clear proofs, but they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus, We seal the hearts of the transgressors.”[5]
Every Prophet faced the same cycle of rejection:
- Messenger is sent with clear proofs, calling to faith.
- Rejection arises—not due to lack of evidence, but out of arrogance and fear of losing status.
- The Messenger remains patient despite hostility and mockery.
- Persecution escalates as opponents seek to silence the truth.
- Allah’s decree arrives—leading to either destruction or unexpected repentance.
📖 “And were it not for Allah repelling some people by means of others (Tadāfu’), the earth would have been corrupted. But Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.”[6]
🚀 Extending This Pattern to Our Time
- Today, rejection of faith persists, but divine intervention has shifted to prolonged struggle.
- The role of believers is not passive—it requires active engagement, patience, and adherence to divine law.
- Tadāfu’ continues, ensuring that truth and falsehood will always be in conflict until the final victory of faith.
🚀 With this framework in mind, we now turn to Section I, where we explore how the stories of Nuh, Musa, and Yunus (AS) illustrate this transition in divine Sunnah. 📖✨
🚀 Section I
The Recurring Struggle of Da’wah: Patterns of Rejection & Divine Justice
📖 “Then after him, We sent Messengers to their people, they brought them clear proofs, but they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus, We seal the hearts of the transgressors.”[7]
🔹 This verse summarizes a painful reality—one that every Prophet encountered: clear signs were presented, yet the majority still rejected faith, not due to ignorance but out of arrogance and resistance to change.
This cycle of rejection is not without consequence—Allah warns of the fate of past nations who persisted in disbelief:
📖 “And indeed, We destroyed the generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they would not believe. Thus, We recompense the criminal people.” 📖 “Then We made you successors in the land after them, so that We may see how you will act.”[8]
Throughout history, this pattern of rejection has remained constant:
- A Messenger is sent with undeniable proofs.
- The people reject the truth—not because they lack evidence, but due to pride and fear of losing power.
- Da’wah carriers persist with patience, despite opposition and mockery.
- Persecution escalates as opponents seek to silence the truth.
- Allah’s decree eventually unfolds—bringing either divine punishment or unexpected repentance.
Surat Yunus highlights three prophetic stories that exemplify this pattern, each offering a unique perspective on perseverance in Da’wah:
- Prophet Nuh (AS)– A testament to unwavering patience, as he endured 950 years of rejection, yet never abandoned his mission until Allah’s decree came.
- Prophet Musa (AS)– The challenge of confronting arrogance and power, as Pharaoh only declared belief at the moment of destruction, proving that true faith must come willingly.
- Prophet Yunus (AS) – A lesson in divine wisdom and timing, as his people repented after he had already left, proving that Allah’s guidance unfolds beyond human expectations.
Each of these stories reinforces three key lessons for Da’wah carriers:
✅ Patience in Da’wah is a test of faith—delayed results do not mean failure.
✅ Rushing results can lead to regret—Allah’s timing is always best.
✅ Allah’s mercy is always near—guidance can come when least expected.
🚀 By understanding this recurring pattern, Da’wah carriers can find reassurance in their struggles, knowing that history affirms the ultimate victory of truth.
📌 The Story of Nuh (AS): The Longest Da’wah and the Test of Patience
📖 “And recite to them the news of Nuh. When he said to his people: ‘O my people, if my presence and my reminding you of the signs of Allah are burdensome for you, then in Allah I put my trust…’”[9]
The story of Prophet Nuh (AS) is a profound example of patience, resilience, and unwavering faith in Da’wah. For 950 years, he tirelessly invited his people to Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah)—calling them day and night, in private and public, with wisdom and sincerity. Yet, despite his relentless efforts, only a small handful of people believed.
His story reflects a universal pattern of rejection that every Da’wah carrier will face:
- Rejection is not due to lack of evidence but due to arrogance and attachment to falsehood.
- Mockery and persecution are inevitable, but persistence is key.
- Divine help comes, but only when Allah decrees it—patience is the true test of faith.
🚀 The Repeated Cycle of Rejection in Nuh’s (AS) Story
Step | Qur’anic Evidence | Pattern of Rejection | Lesson for Da’wah Carriers |
1-Messenger Sent | 10:71 | Nuh (AS) calls his people to Tawheed with clear proofs. | Success in Da’wah is measured by sincerity, not numbers. |
2️– Rejection Due to Arrogance | 71:5-7 | His people reject him not because of lack of evidence but out of arrogance and blind adherence to their ancestors. | Rejection is often rooted in pride, not ignorance. |
3️– Mockery and Persecution Escalate | 11:36 | His people ridicule him, ignoring his persistent Da’wah. | Opposition is inevitable, but persistence is key. |
4️– Divine Decree Arrives | 10:73 | Allah saves Nuh (AS) and the believers while the rejecters are destroyed. | When rejection is absolute, Allah’s decree prevails. |
📖 “But if you turn away [from accepting my doctrine of Islamic Monotheism], then no reward have I asked of you, my reward is only from Allah, and I have been commanded to be one of the Muslims.” 📖 “They denied him, but We delivered him, and those with him in the ship, and We made them generations replacing one another, while We drowned those who belied Our Ayat. Then see what the end of those who was were warned.”[10]
🔹 The Ultimate Test: Nuh (AS) Never Gave Up Until Revelation Commanded Him
Despite centuries of rejection, Nuh (AS) never abandoned his people—he continued calling them, exhausting every possible method. He was ridiculed, mocked, and accused of being misguided.
- But Nuh (AS) never gave up hope in their guidance.
- He only supplicated against them when Allah informed him that no one else would believe.
- At that moment, he began preparing the Ark, saving the believers from divine punishment.
🚀 This is a powerful message to Da’wah carriers—rejection should never lead to despair. We persist until Allah’s decree unfolds.
📖 Key Takeaways from Nuh’s (AS) Story for Da’wah Carriers
✅ People reject truth out of arrogance, not lack of evidence.
✅ Patience in Da’wah is a sign of sincerity—Nuh (AS) persevered for 950 years.
✅ Few will believe, but their faith is worth more than the rejection of the masses.
✅ Divine help comes at the right time—never too soon, never too late.
✅ Da’wah requires complete trust in Allah’s wisdom—results are in His hands alone.
📖 “They denied him, but We delivered him, and those with him in the ship, and We made them generations replacing one another, while We drowned those who belied Our Ayat. Then see what the end of those who was were warned.”[11]
🚀 The story of Nuh (AS) serves as a powerful reminder—rejection may persist for generations, but the truth will always prevail. Despair has no place in Da’wah. 📖✨
🚀 Section II:
The Shift from Eradication to Mutual Resistance –
📖 “Then after them, We sent Musa and Harun to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our signs. But they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people.”[12]
The story of Musa (AS) and Pharaoh represents a turning point in divine intervention—it marks the last instance of complete eradication of an opponent through divine punishment. After this, Allah’s Sunnah shifted from cosmic destruction to mutual resistance (Tadāfu’), where truth and falsehood would struggle over time instead of being immediately annihilated.
This shift occurred after the drowning of Pharaoh, when Musa (AS) received the Torah, and Jihad was legislated as the means of resisting falsehood. This fundamental transformation changed the way divine justice unfolded for future nations—including the followers of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
📖 The Last Eradication: The Struggle Between Musa (AS) & Pharaoh
The confrontation between Musa (AS) and Pharaoh mirrors the same cycle of rejection seen in past nations, but it ends with a transition away from universal eradication.
✅ Stage 1: The Message Reaches a Corrupt Tyrant
📖 “So when the truth came to them from Us, they said: ‘This is indeed clear magic.'”[13]
Pharaoh, like past oppressors, rejected the truth—not out of ignorance, but out of arrogance and a desire to maintain control.
- Instead of considering the truth, he dismissed it as magic.
✅ Stage 2: Pharaoh’s Arrogance & Fear of Losing Power
📖 “They said: ‘Have you come to us to turn us away from that which we found our fathers following, and that you two may have greatness in the land? We are not going to believe you two!'”[14]
Just like the people of Nuh (AS), Pharaoh and his chiefs feared losing status and control.
- They accused Musa (AS) and Harun (AS) of seeking power, rather than sincerely calling to the truth.
✅ Stage 3: The Confrontation Between Truth & Falsehood
📖 “And when the sorcerers came, Musa said to them: ‘Cast down what you want to cast!’ Then when they had cast down, Musa said: ‘What you have brought is sorcery, Allah will surely make it of no effect. Verily, Allah does not set right the work of the corrupters.'” [15]
Pharaoh attempted to counter the truth through deception, but falsehood cannot stand against Allah’s guidance.
- Despite this miracle, Pharaoh and his elites continued to resist.
✅ Stage 4: Pharaoh’s Tyranny & the Oppression of Believers
📖 “But none believed in Musa except the offspring of his people, because of the fear of Pharaoh and his chiefs, lest they should persecute them.” [16]
The few who believed in Musa (AS) were afraid of Pharaoh’s oppression.
- This reflects how tyrants use fear to suppress the truth—just as oppressive regimes do today.
✅ Stage 5: The Final Supplication Against Pharaoh
📖 “And Musa said: ‘Our Lord! You have indeed bestowed on Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the life of this world, our Lord! That they may lead men astray from Your Path. Our Lord! Destroy their wealth, and harden their hearts, so that they will not believe until they see the painful torment.'”
Like Nuh (AS), Musa (AS) persisted in Da’wah until revelation confirmed that Pharaoh would never believe.[17]
- Only then did he make Du’a against him, and Allah responded.
✅ Stage 6: The Last Cosmic Eradication – Pharaoh’s Drowning
📖 “And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh with his hosts followed them in oppression and enmity, till when drowning overtook him, he said: ‘I believe that none has the right to be worshipped but He, in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will).'” 📖 “Now (you believe) while you refused to believe before and you were one of the corrupters?” 📖 “So this day We shall deliver your (dead) body (out from the sea) that you may be a sign to those who come after you! And verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our signs.”[18]
- Pharaoh’s destruction was unique—his body was preserved as a warning for future tyrants.
- Unlike past nations, divine eradication would no longer be the response to rejection.
🚀 With this event, the era of divine eradication ended, and the Sunnah of Mutual Resistance (Tadāfu’) began.
📖 The Shift to Mutual Resistance: Musa (AS) Receives the Torah
📖 “And We indeed gave Musa the Scripture after We had destroyed the former generations.”[19]
- This verse marks a historic transition—after the destruction of Pharaoh, Allah revealed the Torah.
- From this point forward, divine justice would take the form of long-term struggle, not instant destruction.
📖 “And were it not for Allah repelling some people by means of others (Tadāfu’), the earth would have been corrupted. But Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.”[20]
Jihad was legislated as the means of resisting falsehood—no longer would entire nations be destroyed by divine intervention.
- Instead, truth and falsehood would struggle through mutual resistance.
🚀 Lessons for Da’wah Carriers from Musa’s (AS) Story
- Falsehood will always resist the truth, often through arrogance and fear of losing power.
- The rejection of truth is rarely due to lack of evidence—it is due to pride, status, and control.
- Persecution is a strategy used by tyrants to silence the message of truth—Da’wah requires perseverance.
- Victory is not always immediate—sometimes divine justice takes time, but it is always certain.
- With Pharaoh’s destruction, the struggle against falsehood transitioned from eradication to resistance.
🚀 Surat Yunus teaches Da’wah carriers that the days of instant victory are gone—now, success comes through resilience, strategic struggle, and trust in Allah’s timing.
📖 Final Takeaways: The End of Eradication, The Start of Resistance
📖 “And fight them until there is no more fitnah and the religion, all of it, is for Allah. “[21]
- Musa’s (AS) story marks the last divine eradication—after this, mutual resistance became the norm.
- Da’wah carriers today must embrace this new reality—success is no longer through divine destruction but through perseverance and effort.
- Tadāfu’ continues, ensuring that truth and falsehood will always be in conflict until the final victory of faith.
✅ The Repeated Cycle of Rejection in Musa’s (AS) Story | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
🚀 Musa’s (AS) story is the turning point in divine intervention—from complete destruction to prolonged resistance. Da’wah carriers must recognize that success now comes through patience, strategic struggle, and unwavering trust in Allah. 📖✨
🚀 With this framework in mind, we now turn to the final section—how the story of Yunus (AS) demonstrates that even when hope seems lost, Allah’s wisdom is always at work. 📖✨
📌 The Story of Yunus (AS):
The Concluding Message of Surat Yunus – The Danger of Despair in Da’wah
After narrating the struggles of Nuh (AS) and Musa (AS), Surat Yunus ends with the unique case of Yunus (AS)—a messenger who, unlike others, departed from his people too soon. His story provides the final lesson in the Surah: despair has no place in Da’wah.
📖 “Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.”[22]
This verse highlights an exception in history—the only time a nation repented after their prophet had left them. This serves as a powerful reminder to Da’wah carriers that the unseen wisdom of Allah is always at work.
🚀 What Makes Yunus (AS) Different?
Aspect | Other Prophets | Yunus (AS) |
People’s Response | Majority rejected faith | People repented after the Prophet left |
Messenger’s Action | Stayed despite rejection | Left his people too soon |
Outcome | Punishment descended | Mercy was granted |
Unlike Nuh (AS) and Musa (AS), who persevered despite rejection, Yunus (AS) acted in haste, assuming his people were beyond hope. But Allah’s decree unfolded differently—his people repented after he left, and punishment was lifted.
🚀 The lesson from Yunus (AS) is clear:
Never despair in Da’wah—Allah’s wisdom unfolds beyond what we see.
📖 Transition to a New Psychological Struggle in Da’wah
The previous stories warned against arrogance as the primary cause of rejecting truth. Now, the story of Yunus (AS) highlights another counterproductive mindset—despair leading to compromise.
While Nuh (AS) persisted for 950 years and Musa (AS) confronted the world’s greatest tyrant, Yunus (AS) left too soon—an act that momentarily distanced him from Allah’s favor.
📖 “And be patient, for indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And let not those who lack certainty disquiet you.”(Surat Ar-Rum 30:60)
🚀 With this, the message of Surat Yunus is complete: Da’wah is a long and difficult path, but those who persist will always prevail. 🤲📖✨
