When Society Lost Its Way — Revelation Rebuilt It
The Prophet ﷺ described the condition of humanity before his mission:
«إِنَّ اللَّهَ نَظَرَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ فَمَقَتَهُمْ، عَرَبَهُمْ وَعَجَمَهُمْ، إِلَّا بَقَايَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ»
“Allah looked at the people of the earth and detested their condition, Arabs and non-Arabs alike, except for remnants of the People of the Book.”
But what had gone so terribly wrong?
This khutbah examines the world before the coming of Muhammad ﷺ through five essential foundations without which a healthy society cannot survive: Tawḥīd, life, family, mind, and wealth.
Tawḥīd had been corrupted by shirk and the distortion of revelation. Human life was violated through killing, oppression, and injustice. The family was damaged by corrupt relationships and the denial of rights. The mind was harmed by intoxicants, ignorance, and superstition. Wealth was corrupted through ribā, exploitation, and unjust consumption of people's property.
Then Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with Revelation.
The Qurʾān did not merely introduce new rituals. Revelation began rebuilding human society from its foundations—restoring Tawḥīd, protecting life, strengthening the family, preserving the mind, and establishing justice in wealth.
The transformation was extraordinary:
A world that had lost its way → Revelation → transformed individuals → strong families → a believing community → a society of guidance.
The central message of the khutbah is especially relevant today:
You cannot repair a society merely by changing its politics, economy, or institutions while its essential foundations are collapsing. Lasting reform begins when Divine guidance restores the foundations upon which human life was meant to stand.
